Library - Dyslexia (specific learning difficulty)
Information about dyslexia (SLD) Dyslexia is
a specific learning difficulty (SLD) characterized by reading
difficulties. Some individuals may also have difficulty writing, spelling,
or working with numbers, and may have difficulty with memory or
organisation.
There is now much more knowledge about dyslexia
available for parents. If you have concerns the first step is to tell your
child's school about them.
It is very important that you are
specific about your child's problems. Keep a folder in which you detail
why you suspect they may be dyslexic. If possible include some samples of
written work with instances of poor spelling. Record for a few weeks how
long homework has taken and how often it remains unfinished. Describe
instances of negative attitude to school work especially reading. Mark
comments on school reports that suggest lack of concentration,
disappointing written work or lack of improvement in reading and spelling.
Is revision a nightmare? Are exam results below expectations? It is also
worth mentioning if another family member has dyslexic tendencies.
Balfron High School Library has a number of resources
to support learning and teaching of pupils with
dyslexia.
