Standard Grade Science
AIM OF COURSE
This course was
developed specially for Standard Grade. It is important to note
that, at present, the Scottish Qualifications Authority offers no
examination at Higher Grade in Science. Standard Grade Science
is designed mainly for pupils who do not wish to specialise in
Biology, Chemistry or Physics. As well as giving pupils useful
knowledge about themselves and the world they live in, it develops
ways of approaching and solving everyday problems.
COURSE CONTENT
Standard Grade Science
involves the study of some areas of Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
The course consists of four compulsory topics: Healthy and Safe
Living, Introduction to Materials, Energy and its Uses and a Study
of Environments. One additional topic, selected by the school, may
also be taught. This allows schools the flexibility to choose areas
of study that will be interesting and relevant to their pupils. It
can also include new applications and developments in Science.
ASSESSMENT
Grades will be given
for Knowledge and Understanding (or scientific facts and ideas and
their applications), Problem Solving and Practical Abilities.
Knowledge and Understanding and Problem Solving are assessed
externally by the Scottish Qualifications Authority in a written
exam. Practical Abilities are assessed within the school. |
