S1 Science

AIM OF COURSE

The purpose of this course is to give the pupils a sense of discovery and enjoyment in Science and to develop their confidence in using scientific apparatus and techniques.

COURSE CONTENT

The pupils are introduced to the methods, ideas and vocabulary of Science through subject matter drawn from Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

The course is divided into sections.  Among the topics studied are Energy, Changing Materials and Living Things.

While practical Science is the dominant feature, throughout the year, some time is spent developing information skills for Science, by using the resources of the Library.

ASSESSMENT

At the end of each of the first three sections there is a short written test.  The next three sections are grouped together into a more substantial test, to give practice in retaining information over a longer period.  These results provide information for a report to parents in May on pupils’ progress in Science.
