What
is Religious and Moral Education?
Religious and Moral Education
is an academic subject in its own right. It is about religion, and
about the beliefs of a wide range of peoples.
A useful summary of the work
of the department can be found in two possible answers to the question “What
are we here for?”
- our
Religious Education classes at school are all about searching, about
learning to live at peace with other people through understanding their
beliefs and customs
- our
Religious Education classes at school are all about searching, about
learning to live at peace with ourselves by finding out things which help
us give meaning to our lives.
In dealing with the sensitive
issues of belief, the ethos of the department is to take a philosophical
rather than a doctrinal or confessional approach to religion.
Whatever beliefs a pupil may hold, it is hoped that by examining some of
the major belief structures of the world that those personal beliefs may be
enriched, and that tolerance of others may be engendered.
Religious Observance lies
outwith the remit of Religious and Moral Education Department.
