Higher Product Design

 

The pace of change in industry and society is constantly increasing due to the impact of new materials, processes and technologies. This course focuses on the design and manufacture of products for the market place and is designed to improve your knowledge of industrial manufacturing processes and materials. In addition you will develop understanding of the economic considerations and social implications of design and manufacture.

You will be engaged in both creative and technological studies to help you develop a range of skills, including initiative, vision, flexibility and self-reliance.

 

Entry to the Course

This is at the discretion of the school/college but you would normally be expected to have attained one of the following

·         Standard Grade Craft and Design at Credit level

·         Standard Grade Art and Design at Credit level

·         Intermediate 2 Product Design units or course.

·         Standard Grade Graphic Communication  at Credit Level

 

Course Structure

This course has three mandatory Units:

DF4V12 Product Design : Design Analysis 1 credit (40 hours)

DF4W12 Product Design : Developing Design Proposals 1 credit (40 hours)

DF4X12 Product Design : Manufacturing Products 1 credit (40 hours)

All courses include 40 hours over and above the 120 hours for the component Units.  This may be used for induction, extending the range of learning and teaching approaches, support, consolidation, integration of learning and preparation for external assessment.

 

Product Design : Design Analysis (Higher)

OUTCOME 1

Evaluate a commercial product.

OUTCOME 2

Establish a design specification from a brief.

 

Product Design : Developing Design Proposals (Higher)

OUTCOME 1

Produce a design proposal.

OUTCOME 2

Use Graphic techniques during the production of a design proposal.

 

Product Design : Manufacturing Products (Higher)

 

OUTCOMES

1. Explain why particular materials are used for the manufacture of commercial products.

2. Explain why particular processes and systems are used for the manufacture of commercial products.

3. Produce an orthographic drawing suitable for use in the manufacture of a given product.

 

DETAILS OF COURSE ASSESSMENT

The Higher Product Design Course is externally assessed against the Grade Descriptions as detailed in the Course Arrangements.  The Course assessment will provide the basis for grading attainment in the Higher Product Design Course awards.  Course awards will be graded A to D, and will be based on the total score achieved in the Course assessment.

The Course assessment of the Higher Product Design Course will consist of two equally-weighted components:

¨      Question Paper 70 marks

¨      Design  Assignment 70 marks

 

Core Skills

·         H Problem Solving (Critical Thinking, Planning and Organising, Reviewing and Evaluating).

 

Assessment

The units are assessed internally by the teacher/lecturer.  The Design Assignment Folio is externally marked by the SQA and there is a final examination, set and marked by the SQA.
