Intermediate 2 Physics
Why Physics?
This course is designed to increase
your knowledge and understanding of the facts, ideas, techniques and
applications of Physics. It provides you with the opportunity to
develop skills such as experimenting, investigating and analysing.
You will use these skills to find solutions to scientific problems.
The study of Physics is valuable for a wide range of career paths
and makes a useful contribution to your general education.
Entry to the
Course
This is at the
discretion of the school but you would normally be expected to have
attained one of the following

Standard Grade
Physics with Knowledge and
Understanding and Problem Solving at Grades 3 or 4.
·
Intermediate 1
Physics at Grade C or above.
·
Standard Grade
Biology,
Chemistry or
Science with Knowledge and
Understanding and Problem Solving at Grades 1 to 2.
·
Intermediate 2
Biology or
Chemistry at Grade C or above.
and
·
Standard Grade
Mathematics at General level or
Intermediate 1
Mathematics.
Course
Outline
The course
consists of two 40 hour units, two 20 hour units and 40 hours
flexible time.
Mechanics
and Heat (40 hours)
This unit involves the study of

This unit involves the study of

electrical energy

electromagnetism

Waves and
Optics (20 hours)
This unit involves the study of

Radioactivity(20 hours)
This unit involves the study of

ionising radiations
·
dosimetry
·
half life and safety
·
nuclear reactions
Core Skills

Assessment
The course is
assessed by a combination of internal assessment by the
teacher/lecturer and an external examination, set and marked by the
SQA.
