Intermediate 2 Music

 

Why Music?

This course provides you with the opportunity to develop interests which contribute to your personal development, enhance your quality of life and provide the skills and knowledge required for further study and enjoyment of music.

 

Entry to the course

This is at the discretion of the school/college but you would normally be expected to have attained one of the following

·         Standard Grade Music at General level

·         Intermediate 1 Music units or course

·         any equivalent qualification.

 

Course Outline

The course consists of one 80 hour unit and one 40 hour unit selected from seven optional units, plus 40 hours flexible time.

Performing, Inventing and Listening (80 hours)

This unit offers opportunities to

·         perform music from a wide range of styles in a solo and/or group situation on one instrument

·         invent original music with evidence of originality, creativity, planning and good use of compositional techniques; arranging and improvising may be included where appropriate.

·         listen to music which is relevant and related to practical experiences.

Optional Units –one to be selected

Accompanying

This unit provides the opportunity for you to develop skills in accompanying, sight playing, harmonisation and transposition. Keyboard instruments, guitar, clarsach, concert harp or accordion may be used. Skills will be developed through regular practice using a broad range of music.

Inventing

This unit allows you to build on the inventing skills developed in the 80 hour unit. You will be able to broaden and deepen your creative skills.

Listening

This unit allows you to broaden and deepen your listening skills to build upon the work experienced in the 80 hour unit.

MIDI sequencing

This unit allows you to develop skills in the use of MIDI technology including setting up and using a MIDI sequencer and synthesiser to invent, record, edit and mix music.

Performing: Extension 1 and Extension 2

These units provide the opportunity to develop performance skills on another instrument or on voice.

In Extension1 you are required to prepare a recital of music in a solo and/or group situation equivalent in task level to AB Grade III or similar.

Extension 2 is equivalent to AB grade IV or similar and is therefore suitable for those whose skills in performing have developed beyond that required for Extension 1. In this case the course award given will reflect the added value of attaining a unit in Performing- Extension2.

Sound Engineering and Production

This unit provides you with the opportunity to develop skills in the use of recording technology such as setting up and using multi-track equipment to record and mix musical performances from a variety of sources.

* Contained only in an optional unit

 

Assessment

The course is assessed by a combination of internal assessment by the teacher/lecturer and external examinations by the SQA.
