Music
Performing, Listening and Inventing are the
three elements which form the framework of the PIL Unit at all
levels. Candidates will be expected to study all three elements as
part of the PIL Unit, but in the area in which they feel most
confident they may undertake an in-depth study at Extension level.
The main elements are:
Performing (and Accompanying) involves
performance on one instrument, or voice, and on a second instrument
for those candidates opting for the Performing Extension.
Throughout the course pupils will perform music from a variety of
styles and periods, developing playing and reading skills as
appropriate.
Listening involves developing a deeper
awareness and perception of a variety of musical styles and
concepts. Pupils will listen to a wide range of music, through a
number of topics, including Classical, Jazz, Scottish, Vocal and
Popular.
Inventing involves pupils creating their
own pieces of music through composing, arranging and improvising.
At least one musical invention should be produced for each topic or
unit of work covered.
HOMEWORK

The type and nature of homework will vary depending on
the topic, and particular element, being studied. Details are given
below of the type of homework appropriate to each element.

Regular practice will be necessary on each
instrument. It is recommended that pupils spend some time
practising every day.

Regular revision of concepts studied in class.
·
Completion of written Listening assignments related to
work done in class.
·
Follow up work to activities in class.
·
Continual development of at least one musical
invention which will comprise the Inventing folio. |
