Standard Grade
Mathematics
AIMS OF COURSE
Standard Grade Mathematics
aims to help pupils develop the techniques and strategies required
for solving and investigating real-life problems and the skills to
communicate the results effectively.
In S3 pupils will be
following either the Credit/General course or the General/Foundation
course. All pupils will be placed in an S3 class at a level
appropriate to their ability as demonstrated throughout S1 and S2.
COURSE CONTENT
Standard Grade courses
build upon knowledge and skills obtained in S1 and S2. Pupils will
continue to study Number and Information Handling, more formal
Algebra will be introduced, Shape will develop into more formal
Geometry and the study of Trigonometry will be introduced. Pupils
need to be able to apply their knowledge and skills to a wide
variety of problems.
The Credit/General course
has much more core content than the General/Foundation course. Full
details of the course content at all three levels can be found at
www.sqa.org.uk in the Arrangements Documents.
ASSESSMENT
There are 2 assessable
elements at Standard Grade, both assessed by the final examination:
Knowledge and
Understanding – tests facts, skills and techniques
Reasoning and Enquiry –
tests the ability to apply knowledge to find solutions to problems.
Pupils will undertake
assessments twice in S3 and twice in S4. All assessments will
follow the same format as the final examinations. |
