S1 and S2 Homework

Brief description of course Type of homework Frequency

While all pupils will work at their own level of ability, all S1 and S2 pupils follow a common course covering the attainment targets set out in the 5-14 guidelines.

The concepts, facts and techniques taught are described in 3 broad groups - Number, Money and Measurement; Shape, Position and Movement; and Information Handling.

Mathematical activities will usually involve a combination of problem-solving and enquiry skills, and basic facts, concepts and techniques in one or more of these three groups.

The nature of the homework will vary depending on the topic being studied and may consist of:

At this level. pupils are expected to undertake an average of around 30 minutes of homework each week

·   Completing work started in class ·   As necessary, to ensure pupils are up to date with the others in the class.
·   Undertaking further practice of work introduced in class ·   As necessary, to ensure fluency in new skills
·   Formal homework exercises ·   To revise and consolidate earlier work
·   Continuous reflection upon the content of the course. ·   Pupils will be expected to plan the revision of completed work and the learning of Mathematical facts and processes.

 ·  Pupils are strongly encouraged to look over work done in class after each lesson to ensure familiarity and to seek prompt clarification of any problem areas

In addition to work done in class, opportunities to improve skills and to consolidate knowledge of basic facts and techniques can be found on  number of websites such as the Bitesize revision site for KS2 and KS3 - see web links section of the school website; www.sqa.org.uk - see under Services for Learners; www.mathsroom.co.uk - see links down left hand side of the front page; www.mathcentre.co.uk - revision of all topics and basic number skills. Other useful websites are notified to pupils and posted around the Mathematics area in school and can be seen by pupils every time they come to Mathematics. Computer access is always available to pupils outwith class times e.g. at lunchtimes.
