Brief Description of Course

The course consists of three units and a Practical Investigation.

Unit 1 – Electronic Structure and the Periodic Table (20 hours)

Unit 2 – Principles of Chemical Reactions (40 hours)

Unit 3 – Organic Chemistry (40 hours)

Practical Investigation and report (20 hours)

Type of Homework

Experimental records including  a laboratory notebook of Prescibed Practical Activities and a day book record of project plans and  progress made during the Investigation .

Investigtation report - this will involve production of more than one draft before submission to the exam authorities.

Consolidation of theory topics and completion of exercises begun in class to monitor personal progress at each stage.

Three formal homework exercises for each theory Unit.

Frequency

The formal homework exercises are issued at three stages during each topic, together with a completion date.

The other types of work that are expected from the student are ongoing throughout the course and are intended to train the student to be responsible for her/his own progress in learning and to plan work in order to meet both short and long term deadlines.
