Intermediate 2 Chemistry

Why Chemistry?

This course is designed to provide a broad coverage of key concepts in Chemistry and demonstrates the relevance of Chemistry in our everyday lives. It provides a bridge between Standard Grade Chemistry at General level and further study at Higher. In addition it provides you with background knowledge and problem solving skills which are valuable in a wide range of career paths.

 

Entry to the Course

This is at the discretion of the school but you would normally be expected to have attained one of the following

·         Standard Grade Chemistry with Knowledge and Understanding and Problem Solving at Grades 3 or 4.

·         Intermediate 1 Chemistry at Grade C or above.

·         Standard Grade Biology, Physics or Science with Knowledge and Understanding and Problem Solving at Grades 1 to 2.

·         Intermediate 2 Biology or Physics at Grade C or above.

and

·         Standard Grade Mathematics at General level or Intermediate 1 Mathematics.

 

Course Outline

Building Blocks

This unit develops knowledge and understanding, problem solving skills and practical abilities in the context of

·         substances

·         reaction rates

·         the structure of the atom

·         bonding

·         structure and properties

·         chemical symbolism

·         the mole

Carbon Compounds

This unit develops knowledge and understanding, problem solving skills and practical abilities in the context of

·         fuels

·         nomenclature and structural formulae

·         reactions of carbon compounds

·         plastics and synthetic fibres

·         natural products

Acids, Bases and Metals

This unit develops knowledge and understanding, problem solving skills and practical abilities in the context of

·         acids and bases

·         salt preparation

·         metals.

 

Core Skills

·         Int.2 Problem Solving ( Critical Thinking, Planning and Organising *, Reviewing and Evaluating *)

·         Int.2 Numeracy ( Using Graphical Information *)

 

Assessment

The course is assessed by a combination of internal assessment by the teacher/lecturer and an external examination, set and marked by the SQA.
