Brief description of the principles/rationale of homework for

INTERMEDIATE 1 BUSINESS MANAGEMENT

The course gives students the opportunity to acquire knowledge of the business organisations and systems in which managers operate.   It focuses on decision making and incorporates the uses of ICT in business, marketing, financial management and human resource management.

Homework forms the basis for reinforcement and enhanced understanding of classwork.   Much of the homework set may be informal with the purpose of students developing investigative and research skills and communicating such research effectively.   Reading appropriate newspaper articles, watching current affairs/business programmes on television or listening to radio news programmes should become a habit for those wishing to develop knowledge of current business events which can be used as examples of business practice in the development of responses to questions.   Homework is also used as a platform to develop the skills and techniques necessary in exam preparation.

Type of homework

·          Formal written exercises to assess knowledge and understanding from topic units contained in each area of study – every 3/4  weeks

·          Reading in preparation for completion of case studies in class or for future class work - as required by demands of course

·          Occasional completion, consolidation or extension of work commenced in class - as required by demands of course

Frequency and expected duration

Frequency as indicated above.   Formal homework may be expected to require 2-3 nights (10 minutes per night?) preparation followed by possibly 20/25 minutes to complete the exercise to the standard required.   Less formal homework may vary between 5 minutes to 15 minutes.   Where homework is a completion of a task started in class this would, of course, depend to a great extent on the commitment shown in class but would normally be no more than 10 minutes.
