Business Management

Why Business Management?

Business education has a key role in the curriculum of schools and colleges because of the importance of business and enterprise in our society today. This course offers you an introduction to the business world and enables you to understand the role and operation of business. It will also help you to develop problem solving skills and improve your personal effectiveness and understanding of business in modern society.

 

Entry to the Course

This is at the discretion of the school but you would normally be expected to have attained one of the following

·         Standard Grade Business Management at General level

·         Intermediate1 Business Management units or course

or

·         Standard Grade English at General level or

·         Intermediate 1 English units or course.

 

Course Outline

The course consists of one 40 hour unit and one 80 hour unit plus 40 hours flexible time.

Business Enterprise (40 hours)

Business activity in contemporary society

This section of the unit deals with

·         the business cycle

·         sectors of activity

·         types of business organisations

·         methods of obtaining finance

·         objectives

·         the role of the entrepreneur

·         stakeholders

·         changes in the business environment

Business information

This section of the unit deals with

·         sources of information

·         types of information

·         uses of information in business

Decision making

This section of the unit deals with

·         types of decision

·         the decision making process

Business Decision Areas (80 hours)

Internal Organisation

This section of the unit deals with

·         structure of organisations

·         factors affecting internal structures of organisations

Marketing

This section of the unit deals with

·         the marketing concept

·         the marketing mix

·         market research

Financial management

This section of the unit deals with

·         the role of the finance function

·         financial information

·         uses and users of financial information

Human resources

This section of the unit deals with

·         elements of human resource management

·         employee relations

Operations

This section of the unit deals with

·         elements of the operations function

·         types of production

·         quality

Information Technology

This section of the unit deals with

·         types and uses of IT

·         benefits, costs and effects of IT.

 

Core Skills

·         Int.2 Problem Solving (Critical Thinking, Reviewing and Evaluating *)

 

Assessment

The course is assessed by a combination of internal assessment by your subject teacher, and an external examination, set and marked by the SQA.

Successful completion of this course may lead to:
