Business Management
AIM OF COURSE
Business is a key
dimension of modern society. Business Management aims to develop
skills and knowledge in students which will develop an appreciation
of the business world in which they live and the factors which
contribute to economic prosperity. These skills and knowledge will
allow them to access, understand and contribute to the business
environment.
COURSE CONTENT
The course covers four
areas of study which should allow students to explore business
management through a series of enquiries which incorporate
Marketing, Human Resources, Operations and Finance.
Area of Study 1
focuses on how businesses are organised, on ownership, enterprise
and entrepreneurship with an emphasis on local businesses.
Area of Study 2 looks
in more depth at the 4 areas above and their role in
organisations. Competition, risk, growth and failure are examined.
Area of Study 3
concentrates on the management of resources, stressing the
importance of people, of quality and also external factors which
affect businesses.
Area of Study 4
highlights the role of management, in particular how management
makes decisions and the consequences of their decisions.
Throughout the course,
opportunities are given for students to acquire skills and
confidence in the use of information technology to handle, present,
and interpret data in realistic business contexts.
ASSESSMENT
Pupils are assessed in
3 areas.

Knowledge and Understanding
and Decision
Making are assessed externally in papers using stimulus
materials based on realistic data.

Practical Abilities
are assessed internally using a CDRom containing a business
simulation on which a series of tasks are to be completed.
