Why Art and Design - Enquiry: Expressive/Design?

This course provides in depth opportunities to select and develop, through practical activity, a visual study reflecting personal interests and strengths; to promote knowledge and understanding, skills of media handling and communication of ideas and feelings through production of high quality artwork. There are maximum opportunities for portfolio production.

Course Outline

The course comprises one 80-hour practical expressive or design unit, plus one 40 hour expressive or design written critical unit, supported by 40 hours flexible time.

Enquiry: Expressive (80 hours)
You will be expected to develop the Enquiry through study of a personally selected area or theme based on or related to the visual arts.

This unit is concerned with:

  • Identifying and investigating an area or theme of personal significance, interest and relevance.

  • Active research of a variety of sources and stimuli – visual and other – leading to imaginative personal response.

  • Sustained exploration and creative personal development of lines of thought and action.

  • Drawing directly at first hand, from three-dimensional sources, for clear purposes.

  • Resolution of ideas, feelings, thoughts and interpretation into finished artwork of variety and high quality.

  • Communicating personal thoughts, feelings, ideas and interpretations through the production of two-dimensional and/or three-dimensional visual forms.

  • Developing ability and confidence in handling media, materials and processes.

Enquiry: Design (80 hours)
you will be expected to develop the Enquiry through study of a personally selected area or theme based on or related to design.

  • Promoting, developing and applying skills of creative thought and action flexibly

  • Identifying, considering and investigating a range of design issues, including functional, visual, aesthetic, tactile, social and economic issues

  • Research and development of a range of approaches, ideas and possibilities

  • Formulating, communicating and justifying proposals, recommendations and/or solutions

Written Critical Activity (40 hours)
This unit is concerned with the development of the visual arts or design and relates directly, and supports the other unit, either Expressive or Design. A written essay is the unit outcome.

 

Assessment

Your teacher in accordance with SQA guidelines assesses units internally.

The course is externally assessed by the SQA.
