Standard Grade Administration

AIMS OF COURSE

Administration introduces pupils to the functions and work of the office and to many aspects of information technology.  It provides a preparation for further study, training or work in either administration or management.  The course is designed to appeal to boys as well as girls.

COURSE CONTENT

The transfer of information is the primary function of any office and is therefore an integral part of the course.  The forms of information transfer introduced in the course range from oral skills, through the use of written forms of communication (letters and forms), to the use of more advanced ICT functions.  Knowledge and Understanding is enhanced through the application of knowledge and procedures in practical tasks throughout the course.

The development of competence in Keyboarding is still considered to be an important foundation to the course; the skills acquired can then be applied to the effective creation and preparation of business documents.   Each pupil develops his/her skills in a working environment through a programme of tasks using Word Processing skills and also the creation and manipulation of Spreadsheets and Databases and where appropriate e-mail and internet research are used.

ASSESSMENT

Pupils are assessed in three areas:

  1. Knowledge and Understanding and Problem Solving - by means of a written examination at the end of the course.

  2. Practical Abilities - by means of the continuous assessment of a series of procedures and tasks to be completed within the last 2/3 months of the course.
